Splitska Monuments

The present settlement was founded in the 16th century, after a previous attempt failed in the 13th century, due to attacks by pirates from Omiš on the mainland.
The town’s church, dedicated to St Mary, was built on the foundations of the previous one dating back to 1228. Inside, the painting of the Madonna with Saints (1577) is by the Venetian Renaissance painter, Leandro Bassano.
Behind the harbour, you will see the castle of the family Cerinic, which was built in 1577. In Antiquity, Splitska used to be the principle port for exporting the famous Brac stone, which was used for the construction of Diocletian’s palace in Split, The White House in Washington, The high alter of Liverpool’s Catholic Cathedral in England, and Berlin’s Reichstag.
Next to the town still stands the remains of the old stone quarry of Rasohe, where slave workers made the relief representing Hercules.
